Niamey, Niger - In a key step toward regional military integration, the defense ministers of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) convened in Niamey on Friday, November 7, 2025.

President Brigadier General Abdourahamane Tiani received a high-level delegation at the Presidential Palace, including General of the Army Corps Sadio Camara, Mali’s Minister of Defense and Veterans Affairs; Brigadier General Célestin Simporé, Burkina Faso’s Minister of State and Minister of Defense; and General of the Army Salifou Mody, Niger’s Minister of State and Minister of National Defense. The meeting was also attended by Brigadier General Ibroh Amadou Bacharou, Chief of Staff to the President, and Mr. Salim Mahamadou Gado, Deputy Chief of Staff.

The discussions focused on the final steps to operationalize the AES Unified Force. Officials emphasized that the meeting demonstrates the political commitment of Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso to translate the AES framework into a fully functional, integrated military force capable of addressing cross-border threats and reinforcing collective sovereignty in the Sahel. Analysts view the Niamey meeting as a decisive precursor to the launch of joint military operations.
