Kigali, December 1, 2025 - Rwandan national carrier RwandAir has officially launched flights to Zanzibar Island in Tanzania and Mombasa in Kenya. The inaugural flight departed Kigali International Airport in Kanombe on Monday, December 1, 2025, aboard a Boeing B737-800NG bound for Zanzibar.

Upon arrival at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport, the aircraft was greeted with a ceremonial water salute, a traditional gesture to welcome a new aircraft or a new destination.

The Zanzibar route marks a new destination for RwandAir, while flights to Mombasa have resumed after last operating in 2019. With these additions, RwandAir now serves three routes in Tanzania and two in Kenya.

RwandAir CEO Yvonne Makolo emphasized the strategic importance of the expansion:“Returning to Mombasa and launching flights to Zanzibar is another step in our expansion journey. By expanding our reach in East Africa, it helps position Kigali as a key destination, provides our customers with more opportunities to explore the region, and opens doors for trade, tourism, and continued cooperation in East Africa.”

Flights between Zanzibar and Mombasa will operate four times a week - on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays - enhancing connectivity within East Africa.
