Rwanda Welcomes 164 Refugees and Migrants from Libya 🕊️
Bugesera, February 26, 2026 - The Government of Rwanda received 164 refugees and migrants who had been stranded in Libya, as part of ongoing humanitarian efforts to assist vulnerable populations. The group includes 143 individuals from Sudan, affected by nearly three years of conflict, 19 from Eritrea, one from Ethiopia, and one from South Sudan. This initiative is part of the Emergency Transit Mechanism (ETM), established through an agreement between Rwanda, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and the African Union (AU). The program provides temporary accommodation for refugees and migrants in Libya while they await permanent resettlement in third countries. The new arrivals were received at the Gashora temporary camp in Bugesera District, where they are processed before being relocated to countries that have agreed to host them. Since the launch of the ETM in 2019, Rwanda has hosted 2,760 refugees and migrants from Libya, with over 2,500 successfully resettled in other countries.
