Rwanda to Boost Tungsten Production with $60 Million Processing Plant

Rulindo, December 2025 - Trinity Nyakabingo Mine, Rwanda’s leading tungsten producer, is set to construct a mineral processing plant in Shyorongi Sector, Rulindo District, expected to be operational by October 2027. The plant, designed to process 60 tons of mined materials per hour, is projected to cost between $44 million (63 billion Frw) and $60 million (87 billion Frw).

Currently, Trinity Nyakabingo Mine produces over 1,000 tons of tungsten annually and employs 1,763 workers. With the new facility, production is expected to triple to 3,000 tons per year. Justin Uwiringiyimana, director of the mine, explained the significance:"This factory will help process ore that was previously discarded because it is not visible to the naked eye. Using improved methods, we expect to increase yields from 40% to 75% of mined sand, potentially producing 250 to 300 tons per month."

Rwanda’s Trinity Metals, one of the country’s largest mining companies, exported 2,226 tons of tungsten, gas, and coltan in 2024, earning $15 million in the first 11 months of 2025. By 2029, the company plans to export 5,201 tons of ore from its Musha, Rutongo, and Nyakabingo mines.

Additional processing plants are underway: a 12.5-ton per hour plant in Musha and a 30-ton per hour plant in Rutongo, with 12-ton per hour plants being installed at other sites. These expansions are part of Trinity Metals’ $100 million investment plan in Rwanda’s mining sector over the coming years.
