Rwanda Embraces 5G: A Glimpse Into the Future of Smart Technology

Five months after the official launch of 5G high-speed internet in Rwanda, the country is beginning to witness the potential of this transformative technology across various sectors. The milestone was first achieved by MTN Rwanda, which introduced the service at Kigali Heights and the Kigali Convention Centre (KCC)-marking Rwanda’s entry into the era of ultra-fast connectivity.

5G technology offers lightning-fast data transfer speeds-up to 1.0 gigabit per second (Gbps)-making it 10 to 100 times faster than current internet services, including fiber optic networks. This capability opens up opportunities for innovations such as remote surgery, self-driving vehicles, industrial automation, real-time gaming, and robotics.

The service, powered by Ericsson, connects multiple devices within a radius of about one kilometer, supporting a vast network of sensors, cameras, and smart machines that can communicate and operate seamlessly. Ericsson, which also partners with Airtel Rwanda, showcased the potential of 5G during the Mobile World Congress (MWC) held in Kigali, where it demonstrated how ultra-fast internet can transform industries and daily life.

One of the standout exhibits was a robotic dog, equipped with a camera, four flexible legs, and a 5G-enabled router using MTN’s SIM card. The robot was designed to perform industrial safety and monitoring tasks, including detecting fires, identifying broken fences, and ensuring workers wear proper safety gear.

“This robot helps ensure that employees are properly dressed for work. We no longer need someone walking around to monitor everything,” said Espoir Ndayishimiye, an Ericsson Rwanda engineer. “Artificial Intelligence and 5G allow it to operate continuously and respond instantly without delay.”

The robot communicates alerts through three methods-sending text messages, app notifications, or audible alarms-making it a useful tool for industries seeking efficiency and round-the-clock surveillance.

In addition to robotics, Ericsson showcased other 5G-powered innovations, such as multiplayer gaming platforms that connect users from different countries in real time, and the Ray-Ban Meta AI Smart Glasses, which integrate augmented reality (AR) and artificial intelligence (AI). These smart glasses can take photos and videos, play music, describe surroundings, report temperature, and even tell time-all through voice commands.

Globally, 5G technology is expected to be a major economic driver, projected to generate $13.2 trillion in revenue and create 22 million new jobs by 2035. So far, 5G networks have been deployed in 101 countries, including 15 across Africa.

With 5G already reaching over five million people in Rwanda, experts believe the technology will accelerate the nation’s transition toward a digital economy, fueling innovation in health care, manufacturing, education, and smart city development.

As Rwanda continues to expand 5G coverage, it positions itself among Africa’s leading digital pioneers-embracing the next wave of technological transformation that promises to reshape industries and everyday life.
