Rwanda - “Brush Your Teeth, I Beg You”: Health Minister Urges Stronger Hygiene Culture
Nyamagabe, November 29, 2025 - Rwanda’s Minister of Health, Dr. Sabin Nsanzimana, has once again called on Rwandans to strengthen their culture of physical hygiene, emphasizing the crucial role of oral hygiene in overall health. The Minister delivered this message on Saturday while participating in Umuganda, the monthly community service activity, in the district of Nyamagabe.
Speaking to residents, Dr. Nsanzimana stressed that cleanliness begins with the body, reminding citizens that maintaining hygiene is part of Rwanda’s national identity.
“Cleanliness has many levels. The first starts with the body. No one should leave home without washing, because it goes against our culture that must be rooted in hygiene,” he said.
The Minister placed particular emphasis on oral hygiene, warning that neglecting it can lead to tooth decay, tooth loss, and other long-term complications when treatment is delayed or ineffective.
“Please brush your teeth,” he urged. “You should not leave the house without brushing, because you end up giving the people you meet the smell of what you ate - sometimes from days before.”
Dr. Nsanzimana stressed that even households with limited means should prioritize buying a toothbrush and toothpaste, noting that these items remain affordable and essential.
Health experts explain that failing to clean one’s teeth regularly exposes the mouth to infections such as cavities, gum disease, and other oral health complications. The National Oral Health Survey 2021 ranked dental caries among the ten most common health problems in the country.
