Rwanda and Mozambique Renew Commitment to Fight Terrorism in Cabo Delgado
Mocímboa da Praia, Mozambique - The Mozambican Army and the Rwandan Security Forces (RSF) have reaffirmed their commitment to continue joint operations against terrorism in northern Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado Province.
The pledge was made during a visit by Gen Júlio dos Santos Jane, Chief of Staff of the Mozambican Army, accompanied by Maj Gen André Rafael Mahunguane, to Rwandan troops stationed in Mocímboa da Praia. The delegation was received by Maj Gen Vincent Gatama, Commander of the Rwandan Security Forces in Mozambique, and other senior officers, who briefed them on the prevailing security situation in areas under Rwandan protection.
The visit marked the official handover between two Rwandan commanders - Maj Gen Gatama, who recently assumed command, and Maj Gen Emmy K. Ruvusha, who returned to Kigali earlier in the week.
Gen Jane praised the achievements of the joint forces in dismantling terrorist networks and restoring peace to previously unstable regions. He also announced that the joint military headquarters of the two countries will be relocated from Pemba to Mocímboa da Praia to enhance coordination and cooperation.
“We commend the tremendous work done by the Rwandan and Mozambican Armed Forces in bringing stability to Cabo Delgado,” Gen Jane said. “We remain committed to deepening our collaboration to achieve lasting peace.”
Since their deployment in July 2021, Rwandan troops and police officers have played a key role in liberating strategic areas from insurgents, securing vital infrastructure, and facilitating the return of displaced residents.
The renewed cooperation follows the August 27, 2025 agreements between Rwanda and Mozambique to strengthen security and trade partnerships.
