Reopening of Komanda-Luna Section Brings Mixed Relief
Ituri - After nearly three years of closure due to ADF rebel attacks and the poor condition of the road, the 75-kilometer Komanda-Luna section of National Route 4 was officially reopened to traffic on December 9, 2025, during a ceremony in Luna, on the border between Ituri and North Kivu.
Funded by the government and rehabilitated with support from Ugandan military engineers, this vital section now provides a shorter and safer route for the transport of people and goods, while also facilitating the intervention of security forces against the ADF.
However, the reopening was overshadowed by tragedy: on the same day, an ADF attack claimed the lives of four civilians, including a three-month-old baby, underscoring that the rebel threat persists and that security along this strategic route must be strengthened to ensure safe traffic and the protection of the population.
