Rehabilitation and Widening of Rubengera-Nyange Road Completed
Rubengera, Rwanda - The Rwanda Transport Development Authority (RTDA) has announced the full completion of the 37.15-kilometer Rubengera-Rambura-Nyange road, marking a major milestone in the rehabilitation and widening of the Karongi-Muhanga road corridor.
The project, which addressed years of damage to the road since its original construction, aims to improve connectivity across the region. According to RTDA, the remaining Nyange-Muhanga section is progressing well, and once completed, the road will link seamlessly with other major arteries, including the Kivu-Belt and Kigali-Huye roads.
The expansion and rehabilitation works have also revitalized the commercial centers of Rubengera, Rugabano, and Nyange, enabling easier movement of vehicles, including public transport, cargo, and private cars, which has helped local traders attract more customers.
The Muhanga-Karongi road, spanning 128 kilometers, was originally completed in two phases, with the first section finished in 2000 and the second in 2002. Roads constructed in Rwanda are designed to last at least 20 years, and with proper maintenance, some can remain in service for up to 30 years.
RTDA noted that the road plays a critical role in Rwanda’s economy, facilitating trade between the Western and Southern provinces and Kigali City, while also serving tourists traveling to destinations such as Rutsiro, Karongi, and Nyamasheke.
