Political Detentions in Niger Draw International Attention

NIAMEY, Niger - Wednesday, November 26, 2025 - Former President Mohamed Bazoum and his wife Khadija Bazoum have now been in detention for over 865 days, prompting their children to launch an international advocacy campaign calling for their release. The prolonged detention has become a focal point of concern for Niger’s international partners, particularly European countries and regional organizations.

The government maintains that the detentions are linked to ongoing legal proceedings. However, international human rights organizations increasingly describe the situation as arbitrary detention. Authorities continue to emphasize national judicial sovereignty while facing persistent calls for a resolution through political dialogue.
