Over 750 Congolese Flee to Rwanda Amid M23-DRC Fighting
Rusizi District, December 5, 2025 - More than 750 Congolese refugees have crossed into Rwanda to escape ongoing clashes between the M23 rebels and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) Army, according to the Rusizi District Administration.
The refugees arrived at the Bugarama border and were largely sent to the Nyarushishi Temporary Camp, with a few opting to travel to Bukavu. Mayor Sindayiheba Phanuel reported that 60% of the refugees are children, 35% are women, and 5% are men. None of the arrivals were reported injured.
The refugees fall into three categories: those seeking transit back to the DRC via Bukavu, asylum seekers staying in the Nyarushishi camp, and individuals who had traveled to the DRC for business but returned due to the conflict. Medical assistance is being provided by the National Institute of Health where needed.
Mayor Sindayiheba reassured the public that Rwanda remains secure, despite the sound of distant gunfire near the border. “Security is being maintained, and development work continues. Rwanda is a peaceful country and welcomes refugees,” he said.
Refugees shared harrowing experiences of the conflict. Riziki Alphonsine, fleeing from Katogota, described houses collapsing from bombs, while Rachel Maombi, from Kamanyola, fled with her husband and five children after bullets struck their home. Maombi, who has a leg disability, stressed the urgent need for peace so they could safely return home.
