North Kivu: Intense Clashes Between FARDC and M23 Cause Mass Displacement in Ihula
Ihula, North Kivu, DRC - On Thursday, 23 October 2025, heavy fighting erupted between the Armed Forces of the DRC (FARDC), supported by Wazalendo self-defense groups, and AFC/M23 rebels in the town of Ihula, Walikale territory, prompting widespread panic and mass displacement of residents to safer areas.
Gunfire from heavy and light weapons was reported from 4 a.m. in several villages near Kalembe, including Katobi, Kalonge, and Matenge. The clashes follow FARDC airstrikes conducted the previous day in Kashebere, along with similar operations in Ihula and Nyarushyamba in the Osso-Banyungu sector.
The violence underscores the continuing volatility in North Kivu and highlights the urgent need for humanitarian assistance to protect civilians and prevent further escalation of the conflict.
