North Kivu: High Tensions as AFC-M23 Occupies New Localities in Masisi

The security and humanitarian situation remains critical in the Masisi territory of North Kivu, where several localities have been taken over by the AFC-M23 rebellion after three days of clashes with the FARDC and local allies, from Sunday, November 17, to Wednesday, November 20.

Despite the recent framework agreement signed in Doha, the fighting led to the occupation of key villages, including Kasheke, Bituna, the main town of the Katoyi sector, and the main town of the Nyamaboko 1 group.

Residents of Mweso and nearby areas have fled the renewed violence. Local authorities and civil society denounce the establishment of a parallel administration by the rebels, warning that the ongoing displacement toward Walikale is worsening an already severe humanitarian crisis.
