Niger Advances Energy Sector Transformation with AfDB Partnership

Niger has signed a $144.7 million (CFAF 80.9 billion) agreement with the African Development Bank (AfDB) aimed at enhancing energy sector governance, competitiveness, and access.

Under the agreement, Niger aims to raise national electricity access from 22.5% to 30% by 2026 and develop 240 MW of solar energy capacity by 2030. The initiative also focuses on governance reforms to improve transparency and revenue mobilization, while strengthening private sector competitiveness through a more stable and reliable energy supply.

AfDB’s investment adopts a holistic approach to Niger’s chronic energy deficit, encompassing rural and urban grid expansion, solar infrastructure development, and modernized transmission networks. The program also targets governance improvements within the Société Nigérienne d'Électricité (NIGELEC), enhancing procurement transparency and updating regulatory frameworks. Economically, the partnership is expected to lower production costs, ensure reliable energy supply, and create new jobs in the renewable energy sector.
