National Assembly Affirms Vigilance Over Washington Accords and Investment Opportunities

Kinshasa March 18, 2026 - The Speaker of the National Assembly, Aimé Boji Sangara, assured Parliament and the public that upcoming discussions on the ratification of the Washington Accords between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda, as well as the Strategic Partnership Agreement with the United States, will be conducted responsibly, without compromising national sovereignty or restricting other international investments. Speaking at the opening of the March 2026 ordinary session, Boji emphasized that these agreements aim to strengthen the DRC’s capacity, promote transparent management of strategic resources, and foster mutually beneficial partnerships. “Our country remains open to all investors of good faith. Beyond mining, there are considerable opportunities in agriculture, industrial processing, tourism, energy, and telecommunications,” he said. The Washington Accords, signed under U.S. auspices on June 27, 2025, and December 4, 2025, seek to end the cycle of insecurity in eastern DRC and encourage regional economic integration. Parliament is expected to review and vote on the ratification bills, as well as consider the draft law on the Inga Dam project during the current session. Boji reassured that the National Assembly will act with “vigilance and responsibility” to ensure the agreements serve both national security and the long-term prosperity of the Congolese people. The accords are part of a broader international framework designed to foster peace, regional stability, and economic growth in the Great Lakes region, while enabling DRC to attract additional foreign investment and develop local industries.
