More Than 33,000 Rwandans Receive Free Medical Care During Liberation Day Outreach

NYARUGURU, Rwanda, July 4, 2026 - More than 33,700 people across Rwanda received free medical treatment through a nationwide outreach program organized by the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) and the Rwanda National Police as part of activities marking the country's 32nd Liberation Day. Health services were provided at several hospitals, including Munini, Byumba, Kirehe, and Gihundwe. A total of 33,722 patients were treated, with 1,004 undergoing surgical procedures and 3,369 receiving free medication. In Nyaruguru District alone, more than 8,400 people received medical care, including over 200 patients treated for eye conditions. Military medical officials said the initiative brought together specialists from major referral and military hospitals, allowing advanced healthcare services to reach communities across all provinces. The program was presented as part of broader efforts to improve public health and support national development. Health Minister Dr. Sabin Nsanzimana praised the initiative, saying it reflects the continued commitment to improving citizens' well-being beyond the achievements of the country's liberation. He also called on the public to support efforts to address social challenges, including teenage pregnancy, substance abuse, and domestic conflicts. The medical campaign formed part of a three-month nationwide civil-military outreach program launched in March 2026, which also included the construction of homes, schools, and bridges, tree planting, the provision of clean water, and livestock distribution to support community development.
