Minister Gasore Outlines Future Use of Kigali and Bugesera Airports

Dr. Jimmy Gasore, Rwanda’s Minister of Infrastructure, has provided details on the future roles of Kigali International Airport (Kanombe) and the new Bugesera International Airport once construction is completed. Speaking on October 9, 2025, after meeting with Senators on the Committee on Foreign Affairs, Cooperation, and Security, Gasore confirmed that Kanombe Airport will no longer handle large passenger or cargo aircraft once the Bugesera facility becomes operational.

“Large passenger and cargo aircraft will not continue to use Kigali Airport in Kanombe. We will explore other activities to keep the airport productive,” he said.

Construction of Bugesera International Airport is progressing steadily, with completion expected by 2027 and full operation targeted for mid-2028. The project covers an area of approximately 900 hectares.

To ensure efficient connectivity, Gasore announced plans for three major roads linking the new airport to Kigali and surrounding areas, with construction scheduled to begin in early 2026.

“The roads will connect Masaka to the airport, the back part of Bugesera, and the Kicukiro bridge to the airport. Studies have been completed, and tenders will be issued soon,” he added.

The new infrastructure is designed to improve travel and cargo handling, positioning Bugesera International Airport as Rwanda’s primary hub for international flights, while Kanombe will focus on alternative aviation-related activities.
