Malian Forces Neutralize Key Daesh Leader Boubacar Demougui in Joint Air Operation
MÉNAKA, Mali - In a significant counterterrorism operation, the Malian army, in coordination with security partners from Burkina Faso and Niger, successfully carried out targeted air strikes in the Inarabane area, southwest of Ménaka. Drones were deployed to precision-target several senior leaders of the Daesh organization, resulting in the elimination of key operatives, including Boubacar Demougui, a high-ranking Daesh commander responsible for northern Ménaka.
Security sources describe Demougui as the operational head of multiple active cells in the region, overseeing logistics, tactical deployments, and management of terrorist detachments. He was reportedly directly involved in the execution of Sidi Barka, president of the Ménaka civil society, an act that sent shockwaves through local communities. Intelligence further confirms that members of Demougui’s family were implicated in the kidnapping of a Spanish hostage in Algeria, highlighting the cross-border scope of his network.
Officials note that the death of Demougui represents a significant blow to Daesh, which maintains influence across northern Mali and the tri-border area encompassing parts of Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso. However, experts caution that the group’s entrenched presence and decentralized structure may allow for rapid leadership replacement, potentially sustaining operational continuity in the region.
The operation underscores the importance of multinational collaboration in counterterrorism efforts and signals a continued commitment by Sahelian states to degrade extremist networks threatening regional stability.
