Mali: Community Leaders Commit to Dialogue as Transitional Authorities Step Up Peace Efforts
Bamako, December 13, 2025 - Mali’s Minister of Reconciliation, Peace, and National Cohesion, Lieutenant General Ismaël Wagué, on Friday received two prominent community leaders from the country’s north, Abdoul Majid Ag Mohamed Ahmed, known as Nasser, and Mohamed Ousmane Ag Mohamedoun, in a renewed push to ease tensions and promote dialogue.
The meeting followed separate consultations held the previous day and concluded with a shared commitment by the two leaders to overcome their differences and work together in line with the National Charter for Peace and Reconciliation. Authorities say the initiative reflects the government’s determination to prioritize dialogue as a cornerstone of stability in fragile regions.
According to officials, such engagement could help facilitate social reintegration, reduce intercommunal tensions, and curb recruitment by jihadist groups, thereby strengthening national cohesion within the framework of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES). Observers caution, however, that dialogue alone will not be sufficient unless accompanied by concrete socio-economic reforms in vulnerable areas, where insecurity, poverty, and forced displacement remain widespread.
