Looting in Mwenga: Civil Society Denounces Abuses in Kasika, Mwenga-Centre, and Kamituga

Mwenga, South Kivu - Civil society groups are denouncing looting committed by soldiers, mainly deserters from the FARDC (Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo) and fighters from the Wazalendo movement, in the towns of Kasika, Mwenga-Centre, and Kamituga.

Testimonies indicate that this looting is paralyzing daily life: businesses and schools are closed, and public transportation has halted. In Kamituga, gunfire erupted on November 25, 2025, when soldiers returning from the front attempted to loot. Burundian stabilization forces in the area reportedly intervened to prevent further violence.

Many residents have taken refuge in their homes for fear of attack, while civil society organizations are calling for urgent intervention to restore security and protect civilians.
