Kayonza: Police Officer Killed in Motorcycle Accident

KAYONZA, Rwanda - August 26, 2025 - A 22-year-old police officer on duty in Kayonza District has died after being struck by a speeding motorcycle, prompting renewed calls from the Rwanda National Police (RNP) for motorists to avoid reckless driving.

The accident occurred at around 7:00 a.m. in Karambi Cell, Murundi Sector, Kayonza District. According to police, the officer was on duty when he attempted to cross a dirt road and was hit by a motorcycle traveling at high speed.

The spokesperson for the Rwanda National Police Traffic Division, SP Emmanuel Kayigi, confirmed the incident, saying the officer sustained serious injuries and later died at Faisal Hospital on Friday evening.

“The motorcycle was speeding and struck the police officer, causing severe injuries. He did not die instantly but passed away upon arrival at the hospital,” SP Kayigi said.

Police confirmed that the motorcyclist, a young man, was also injured and has been admitted to Kanombe Hospital, while his passenger sustained minor injuries and returned home shortly after the incident.

SP Kayigi described the crash as an accident caused by excessive speed, emphasizing that most road accidents are preventable if traffic rules are respected.

“Drivers should avoid carelessness, whether on dirt roads or paved roads. Accidents can happen anywhere and at any time,” he said.“No one should assume that a road with little traffic allows for high speed. You must remember that you are not the only road user.”

The Rwanda National Police expressed its condolences to the family of the deceased officer and urged both drivers and passengers to play an active role in road safety, encouraging passengers to warn motorcyclists against speeding.

The incident comes just a week after another police officer was killed in a separate road accident in Kigali’s city center, highlighting ongoing concerns over road safety and reckless driving.
