KARKARA: Community Gardens Transforming Lives in Zinder
Zinder, December 19, 2025 - In Zinder, where land is under immense pressure, women and people with disabilities are turning small plots into productive community gardens, creating hope, dignity, and food security.
Thanks to these initiatives, 90 households now have reliable means to produce food, feed their families, and generate income. Each garden, covering 625 square meters, is fully equipped with fencing, water storage basins, mobile solar pumping systems, irrigation networks, diverse seeds, fruit trees, and adapted agricultural tools, enabling year-round production despite challenging weather conditions.
During the 2025 rainy season, beneficiaries harvested an average of nearly 370 kg of crops, including rice, millet, sorghum, cowpeas, maize, cassava, and taro, boosting both nutrition and market sales.
Beyond production, the project has profound social impact: households enjoy better diets, increased income, and enhanced self-esteem and recognition within their communities.
The initiative, titled "Women and People with Disabilities in Action for an Ecologically Sustainable Agro-Pastoral System," is funded by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) and implemented by a consortium of NGOs, including DEMI-E, CISP, ACRA Foundation, FNPH, CBM, and KARKARA, contributing to reduced vulnerability and strengthened community resilience.
