JNIM Claims Deadly IED Attack on Malian and Allied Forces in Kidal Region
Kidal Region, April 7, 2026 - The security situation in northern Mali remains highly volatile after the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin) claimed responsibility for a deadly improvised explosive device (IED) attack targeting joint military forces. According to the group’s statement, the attack occurred on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, southwest of Tessalit in the Kidal region. Two armored vehicles reportedly carrying Malian Armed Forces personnel and their Russian allies were targeted. JNIM claims the explosion killed at least two soldiers and wounded four others. No independent verification of the casualties has been provided, and authorities from Mali had not released an official statement at the time of reporting. The incident underscores the persistent insecurity in northern Mali, where armed groups continue to conduct attacks against military convoys despite ongoing counterinsurgency operations.
