JNIM Ambushes Malian Army Convoy in Kayes, Dozens Killed
Kayes, January 29, 2026 - The JNIM (Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims) claimed responsibility for an ambush on a Malian army convoy escorting tanker trucks between Diboli and Kayes in the Kayes region on Thursday, January 29, 2026. According to the group, the attack resulted in: 2 Malian soldiers killed. Four military vehicles set on fire. Seizure of a motorcycle, various weapons, and a large quantity of ammunition. Approximately 50 tanker trucks burned, aggravating the country’s energy crisis. 15 drivers killed in the ambush. The incident underscores the intense security threats facing both military personnel and civilians in western Mali.
