Intense Clashes in Uvira’s Ruzizi Plain Disrupt Traffic on National Route
Uvira, South Kivu March 17, 2026 - Intense fighting erupted on the morning of March 17 between the FARDC/Wazalendo coalition and AFC/M23 rebels in the villages of Kabunango and Runingu, in the Ruzizi Plain. Both sides have reinforced positions, according to local sources. The clashes, involving heavy and light weapons fire, have heightened fear among residents in this border region with Burundi. Additional fighting has been reported in Biriba, Kasambura, and Runingu, with the rebels describing the confrontation as a “widespread war” waged by government forces and their allies. As a result, traffic on National Route 5, the main road connecting Bukavu and Uvira, has been disrupted, complicating movement and transport in the area.
