IED Attack Targets Malian Army and Russian Fighters in Timbuktu Region
Timbuktu Region, March 4, 2026 - The jihadist group Jama'at Nasr al‑Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM) has claimed responsibility for an improvised explosive device (IED) attack targeting Malian military forces and Russian fighters in northern Mali. According to the group, the explosion struck a military vehicle on Wednesday morning along the Niafunké-Tonka road in the Timbuktu Region. JNIM said the device targeted a convoy involving soldiers from the Malian Armed Forces and members of the Africa Corps, the Russian paramilitary formation operating alongside Malian forces. No immediate official statement from the Malian authorities regarding casualties or damage was available at the time of reporting. The attack comes amid continuing insurgent activity in northern and central Mali, where jihadist groups linked to al-Qaeda and the Islamic State frequently target security forces and their allies.
