Historic Water Infrastructure Investment for Zinder Region
NIAMEY, Niger - November 14 - A transformative 98.7 billion CFA franc financing agreement with the African Development Bank (AfDB) has been formally confirmed to support a sweeping overhaul of water and sanitation infrastructure in the Zinder region. The landmark project-covering Zinder city, Mirriah, and 14 surrounding villages-aims to put an end to the chronic water shortages that have affected nearly 700,000 residents for generations, a crisis local authorities have described as “seven decades of rationing, temporary solutions, and perpetual water anxiety.”
The initiative involves the construction of new water treatment plants, the expansion of distribution networks, and the deployment of modern management systems designed to boost daily water production capacity by 45,000 cubic meters. Once completed, the project is expected to fundamentally improve living conditions and strengthen economic opportunities in Niger’s second-largest urban center.
