Heavy Losses Reported Among Burundian Forces in South Kivu Fighting
SOUTH KIVU-DRC - Burundian troops deployed alongside Congolese government forces, Wazalendo militias, and the FDLR have suffered significant losses in ongoing fighting against AFC/M23 in eastern DR Congo, particularly in South Kivu, according to multiple sources.
Burundi’s involvement follows an agreement with President Félix Tshisekedi to support operations against AFC/M23. Since late November, clashes have intensified around Kamanyola, Kaziba, Katogota, Uvira, and surrounding areas. AFC/M23 has repelled several coordinated offensives and retained control of key positions.
On the night of December 4, AFC/M23 launched a major assault on Burundian army positions, killing and capturing dozens of soldiers. Among the dead was Lt Col Athanase Minani, a Burundian battalion commander - the highest-ranking Burundian officer reported killed in the conflict so far. Human rights activist Pacifique Nininahazwe said Minani was killed by a drone strike.
Between December 5 and 6, AFC/M23 seized Rurambo, Lubarika, and the Luvungi center, about 60 km from Uvira. Burundian and allied forces reportedly withdrew southward or crossed back into Burundi.
AFC/M23 spokesperson Lt Col Willy Ngoma said Burundian forces had suffered heavy setbacks, warning against continued foreign involvement in the conflict.
The fighting has triggered civilian casualties, displacement, and widespread destruction. Despite repeated international calls for a political solution, military operations continue, further worsening the humanitarian situation in eastern DR Congo.
