Heavy Fighting Erupts in Minembwe
Minembwe, South Kivu February 2, 2026 - Violent clashes have erupted in Minembwe, South Kivu, between the FARDC, backed by Wazalendo, and a coalition of armed groups including AFC/M23, RED Tabara, Twirwaneho, and Gumino. According to the army, fighting has continued for five days as forces attempt to retake the town, considered a stronghold of Twirwaneho and its allies. FARDC claims to have inflicted heavy losses on the rebels and says civilian protection remains a priority. Local leaders have issued an urgent appeal to youth to distance themselves from the rebellion and support peace efforts.
