Habimana Kizito Among 67 EAC Observers Deployed for Tanzania Presidential Elections

DAR ES SALAAM - Rwanda’s Habimana Kizito, Vice-Chairperson of the National Electoral Commission, is among 67 observers deployed by the East African Community (EAC) to monitor the Tanzania presidential elections scheduled for October 29, 2025.

The deployment follows an invitation from the Tanzanian government and aligns with directives from the EAC Council of Ministers, which tasked the EAC Secretariat with observing elections across member states to promote democracy, peace, and regional stability.

Dr. Speciosa Wandira Kazibwe, former Vice President of Uganda (1994-2003) and Director of EAC election observation missions, emphasized the importance of fair elections, stating, “The conduct of fair and transparent elections is the key to democracy and regional unity.”

The observer team includes experts from all eight EAC member states, members of the EAC Legislative Assembly (EALA), representatives of electoral and human rights commissions, civil society organizations, and EAC offices.

Observers will monitor all stages of the electoral process, including campaigning, voting, vote counting, and post-election reporting. Their work is guided by Article 6(d) of the EAC Treaty, which obliges member states to uphold good governance, democracy, human rights, equality, proportionality, integrity, and respect for constitutional processes.
