Government Announces Historic 40% Minimum Wage Increase

NIAMEY, Niger - Friday, November 21 - In a landmark social policy decision with far-reaching economic implications, the Ministry of Public Service, Labor, and Employment announced a major adjustment to the Guaranteed Interprofessional Minimum Wage (SMIG).

During a press briefing, Secretary General Abdou Dounama detailed the increase from 30,047 CFA francs to 42,000 CFA francs, effective January 1, 2026. The measure addresses a long-standing union demand and represents a strategic effort to strengthen household purchasing power amid inflationary pressures, while reinforcing the government’s social contract with workers nationwide.
