Gisagara: Three Arrested for Alleged Murder of 21-Year-Old Man

Gisagara, November 30, 2025 - The Rwanda National Police in Gisagara District have arrested three men suspected of killing and slitting the throat of a 21-year-old man, Abijuru Athanase. The incident occurred between the night of November 29 and 30 in Shyombo Village, Nyabikenke Cell, Kigembe Sector, as the victim was leaving his shop to go to Nyaruteja Health Centre.

Abijuru, who worked as a butcher and ran a canteen at Umurangara Health Centre, was reportedly ambushed and attacked in a secluded area of a coffee plantation, far from residential homes. The assailants allegedly robbed him before cutting his neck.

Nyabikenke Cell Leader, Antoinette Nyirakamana, stated that the attack occurred in a dark, isolated spot, highlighting the brutality of the crime.

According to Southern Province Police Spokesperson, CIP Kamanzi Hassan, the killing was likely motivated by revenge. Authorities noted that the suspects had been tracking the victim for some time and were reportedly upset because Abijuru had recently imprisoned their child.

“Those suspected of involvement in his death have been arrested, including a man who had threatened him previously, vowing to take revenge,” CIP Kamanzi said.

The victim’s body was taken to Kibirizi Hospital for a post-mortem examination, while the suspects are detained at Nyanza Police Station as investigations continue.
