Fragile Calm Returns to Ihula After Clashes
Ihula, April 17, 2026 - A tense calm has settled in Ihula, in Walikale territory, a day after heavy fighting between AFC/M23 rebels and Wazalendo fighters forced residents to flee. Clashes erupted on April 16 in the locality, located in the Balindu area of the Kisimba group, when Wazalendo elements launched an offensive on positions held by AFC/M23. The fighting triggered widespread panic, with civilians fleeing toward nearby Kalembe or seeking refuge in surrounding bush areas. The human toll remains unclear, though local sources report that a rebel position was set on fire during the brief incursion by Wazalendo fighters. Following the clashes, Wazalendo forces withdrew from the area, allowing AFC/M23 elements to reassert control over the locality. Despite the lull in fighting, the situation remains volatile. Many residents have yet to return to their homes, opting to remain in safer areas amid fears of renewed violence.
