Fragile Calm Returns to Bulende After AFC/M23 and Wazalendo Clashes
Goma, July 2, 2026 - A fragile calm has returned to Bulende, in the Bashali Mokoto area of Masisi territory, North Kivu province, following armed clashes between AFC/M23 fighters and Wazalendo groups. The fighting erupted on Wednesday, July 1, when AFC/M23 elements attempted to advance toward Bukonde, a strategic area located on the border between Bashali Mokoto in Masisi and Kisimba in Walikale territory. The reported objective was to bypass positions held around Mindjendje and continue progress toward Mpety. The advance was met with resistance from Wazalendo fighters stationed in Bulende. According to local security sources, the armed group succeeded in pushing back the AFC/M23 forces, forcing them to withdraw toward Malemo, where they had previously established positions. The clashes reportedly involved heavy and light weapons, causing panic among residents in nearby villages. Several local sources also reported the use of drones by AFC/M23 forces against Wazalendo positions, although the extent of damage and the number of casualties remain unclear. While no major fighting was reported on Thursday, July 2, security conditions in the area remain uncertain. Residents continue to face heightened concerns as armed groups maintain positions in the surrounding areas and tensions persist across Masisi territory.
