Djibouti City, July 6, 2026 - Former Djiboutian minister and veteran diplomat Hawa Ahmed Youssouf has released a new book offering a rare behind-the-scenes account of more than a decade of peace mediation across Africa, shedding light on the diplomatic efforts that shaped conflict resolution between 2010 and 2023. Titled Djiboutian Diplomat at the Heart of African Turmoils (Central African Republic, Madagascar, Comoros, Mali) 2010-2023, the publication recounts her experience in some of the continent's most complex political and security crises, drawing on firsthand involvement in mediation initiatives led under the auspices of the African Union. Across nearly 300 pages, Hawa Ahmed Youssouf reflects on her diplomatic career, including her appointment in 2010 as the first African woman to serve as a Special Representative of the African Union. The book documents negotiations, peace initiatives, and conflict-resolution efforts carried out in the Central African Republic, Madagascar, the Comoros, and Mali, while providing readers with an insider's perspective on the challenges of crisis diplomacy. Rather than serving solely as a personal memoir, the publication examines the practical realities of preventive diplomacy and peacebuilding, illustrating how dialogue, negotiation, and compromise are often conducted away from public attention to prevent violence and restore political stability. The narrative also explores the complex environment in which African mediators operate, including political rivalries, competing international interests, institutional fragility, and the humanitarian consequences of conflict. Through her experiences, the author emphasizes that diplomatic progress often depends on patience, trust-building, persistence, and sustained dialogue among opposing parties. Alongside her professional journey, Hawa Ahmed Youssouf recounts her personal story, reflecting on her upbringing, educational path, and the challenges she overcame to become one of Djibouti's most prominent diplomats. She pays tribute to the role of her family, particularly her mother, whose encouragement and belief in education helped shape her career. The publication also highlights the growing contribution of women to diplomacy, mediation, and peacebuilding across Africa, underscoring their increasing presence in leadership and decision-making positions within continental institutions. For Djibouti, the book represents both a historical record and a recognition of the country's contribution to African diplomacy. By documenting key moments in regional peace efforts, it adds to the continent's diplomatic history while offering valuable insights for researchers, students, policymakers, and future generations interested in conflict resolution and international relations. Released at a time when Africa continues to face complex security challenges, the work serves as a reminder of the critical role of diplomacy, cooperation, and political dialogue in promoting peace and long-term stability across the continent.
