FARDC Repels AFC/M23 Rebel Attack in Kalinga
Walikale February 3, 2026 - The Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC), supported by the Wazalendo, successfully repelled an attack by AFC/M23 rebels in Kalinga, Banamulema (Kisimba group), Walikale territory, North Kivu, on the morning of Tuesday, February 3. According to the administrative secretary of the Kisimba group, the attackers came from Mpety, considered one of the rebels’ main strongholds, aiming to expand their influence by seizing new positions. The FARDC, aided by Wazalendo groups, resisted the assault, forcing the rebels to retreat towards Mpombi, in the Balinda area. In retaliation, the rebels launched bombings in Kalinga, causing panic among civilians and prompting many residents to flee for safety. Security sources confirm that Kalinga remains under the control of the FARDC and Wazalendo, though the situation remains tense in the combat zone.
