FARDC Announces Recapture of Lwanga and Kigongo in South Kivu’s Uvira Territory
Uvira, South Kivu | December 30, 2025 The Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) announced on Tuesday that they have regained control of the localities of Lwanga and Kigongo in Uvira Territory, South Kivu Province, amid ongoing fighting in the region. According to Second Lieutenant Reagan Kalonji, spokesperson for Operation Sokola 2 South in South Kivu, the latest gains follow the recapture of Makobola 1 and Makobola 2 villages earlier this week. He further stated that at least five armed M23 fighters surrendered to FARDC forces during the operations. Despite the army’s announcement, local sources in Uvira reported the arrival of M23 reinforcements in the area beginning Tuesday, December 29, raising concerns about a possible escalation of clashes. On Sunday, December 28, the national military spokesperson, Major General Sylvain Ekenge, confirmed that FARDC had retaken Makobola 1 and Makobola 2 in Fizi Territory, adding that fighting was still ongoing approximately seven kilometers from the town of Uvira. The security situation in southern South Kivu remains volatile as FARDC continues operations against the M23 rebellion, with control over several strategic localities changing hands in recent days.
