According to Second Lieutenant Reagan Kalonji, spokesperson for Operation Sokola 2 South in South Kivu, the latest gains follow the recapture of Makobola 1 and Makobola 2 villages earlier this week. He further stated that at least five armed M23 fighters surrendered to FARDC forces during the operations. Despite the army’s announcement, local sources in Uvira reported the arrival of M23 reinforcements in the area beginning Tuesday, December 29, raising concerns about a possible escalation of clashes.
