Walikale, July 7, 2026 - A fragile calm has returned to Mindjendje, in the Banakindi area of the Kisimba group, Walikale territory, following clashes between AFC/M23 fighters and government forces supported by Wazalendo armed groups. The fighting broke out on Monday, July 6, when AFC/M23 elements launched an offensive against positions held by the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) and their allies. According to local sources, the attackers advanced from Malemo, located in the Bashali Mokoto group of Masisi territory, with the objective of taking control of the strategic Mindjendje area. The confrontation lasted several hours, with heavy and light weapons fire reported across the area. The intensity of the clashes caused panic among residents of nearby villages, particularly Mpety and Nzanganano, where communities feared the violence could spread further. According to local sources, FARDC troops, supported by Wazalendo fighters, managed to halt the offensive and push back the attackers. AFC/M23 forces reportedly withdrew toward Malemo, their initial position. No official information has been released regarding casualties or material damage resulting from the clashes. However, local authorities indicate that Mindjendje remains under the control of government forces and their allies. The latest fighting highlights the continued instability along the border areas between Walikale and Masisi territories, where repeated confrontations between armed groups and security forces continue to threaten civilians and worsen humanitarian concerns in North Kivu.
