EU Parliament Calls on Uganda to Release Opposition Members
BRUSSELS, February 13, 2026 - The European Union Parliament has adopted a resolution condemning violence and the detention of opposition members before and after the January 15, 2026 elections in Uganda. The resolution highlights human rights violations, including internet shutdowns, political violence, and the detention of members of the National Unity Platform, led by Robert Kyagulanyi. Following the elections, President Yoweri Museveni secured 71.6% of the vote, while Kyagulanyi went into exile, alleging that the Ugandan military besieged his home and attempted to arrest him. In its February 12, 2026 resolution, the EU Parliament called for the release of all unlawfully detained individuals and urged Uganda to stop trying civilians in military courts and reveal the whereabouts of missing persons. The resolution notes that detained opposition figures include Dr. Kiiza Besigye, held for over a year, and Robert Kyagulanyi, who fled into exile in January 2026.
