DRC: Nearly 25 Million People Face Acute Food Insecurity, IPC Warns

Kinshasa, DRC - Nearly 25 million Congolese are currently grappling with a food crisis or emergency, with the hardest hit regions in eastern DRC, according to the latest report from the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) released on November 4, 2025.

The provinces most affected include Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Tanganyika, and Maniema, where armed conflict, mass displacement, deteriorating infrastructure, and reduced humanitarian aid are fueling hunger. Of those affected, 3.2 million are in an emergency situation requiring immediate humanitarian assistance.

The IPC warns that the situation could worsen by June 2026, potentially putting over 26 million people at risk of severe food insecurity. The report calls for urgent measures to strengthen rural community resilience and expand humanitarian aid to avert a deepening crisis.
