DRC Government Condemns Forced Civilian Marches in Eastern Provinces

Kinshasa, 23 December 2025 - The Government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo has strongly condemned the forced marches imposed on civilians in several eastern areas currently described as under Rwandan occupation. According to the statement, these actions were allegedly carried out by AFC/M23 elements operating alongside the Rwandan Defence Forces (RDF) in Uvira on 16 December, Kamanyola on 19 December, Goma on 22 December, and Bukavu and Sake on 23 December.

The government denounces the coercion of civilians, including women and youth, into staged demonstrations as a violation of human rights and international law, describing the acts as political and psychological manipulation of local communities. Officials emphasized that using civilians as human shields or instruments of propaganda constitutes a grave attack on national sovereignty and human dignity.

Authorities reaffirmed their determination to protect civilian populations, restore state authority across the national territory, and hold accountable the perpetrators and sponsors of these violations. The government also commended the courage of civilians resisting manipulation and called on all Congolese citizens to remain vigilant, united, and confident in the national institutions and the Armed Forces.

Finally, Kinshasa reiterated its unwavering support for ongoing peace processes aimed at achieving lasting peace, stability, and development in the eastern DRC and the Great Lakes region.
