DRC: European Union Urges Immediate Opening of Humanitarian Corridor in the East

Par Sarah Ndaya2 min de lectureEnglish

Kinshasa, DRC - The European Union (EU) has called for the urgent establishment of a humanitarian corridor in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, to enable the delivery of aid and the resumption of humanitarian flights to conflict-affected areas.

The appeal was made on Wednesday, November 5, by Johan Borgstram, the EU’s Special Representative for the Great Lakes region, during a visit to Kinshasa. Borgstram voiced deep concern over the resurgence of violence linked to the M23 rebellion, which he said is supported by Rwanda and constitutes a violation of Congolese territorial integrity.

While commending the diplomatic efforts of Qatar and the United States to revive peace talks, Borgstram urged all parties to respect the ceasefire and adhere to the principles of international humanitarian law.

The EU envoy is expected to continue his mission in Kampala, where he will hold regional consultations aimed at restoring stability in the Great Lakes region.
