DRC: CENCO says it is "horrified" by Joseph Kabila's death sentence

On 6 October 2025, the National Episcopal Conference of Congo (CENCO) expressed its indignation at the High Military Court's verdict sentencing former President Joseph Kabila to death. In a statement signed by its secretary general, Mgr Donatien Nshole, CENCO reaffirmed its firm opposition to capital punishment, considering it a violation of the fundamental right to life enshrined in the Constitution and divine law.

The Catholic bishops denounced the decision as hasty and incompatible with the spirit of the Gospel, recalling that they had already called for the abolition of the death penalty after the moratorium was lifted in 2024. For them, this sentence marks a serious setback in the defence of human dignity in the DRC.
