DRC - AFC/M23 Accuses Kinshasa of Breaching Peace Agreements

Kinshasa/Uvira, January 1, 2026 Corneille Nangaa, coordinator of the AFC/M23, has accused the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) of failing to honor agreements signed in 2025 aimed at stabilizing the eastern region and ensuring the security of Abanye-Congophone communities. The agreements, signed in July 2025 under Qatari mediation, included a Declaration of Principles, a prisoner release mechanism, a ceasefire and monitoring mechanism, and a basic framework for peace. In a recent statement, Nangaa criticized Kinshasa for betraying the trust of the AFC/M23. “The regime of Kinshasa has shown its inability to uphold its commitments and its own word. This is a regime built on lies and outdated agreements. To date, no prisoners have been released, in clear violation of the signed accords,” he said. He also accused the DRC of ceasefire violations through repeated attacks against AFC/M23 positions. While acknowledging the peace agreement between Rwanda and the DRC signed in Washington as a positive development, Nangaa emphasized that negotiations in Doha between Kinshasa and AFC/M23 have not yielded concrete results. Several agreements from these talks remain unimplemented. Despite these setbacks, Nangaa reaffirmed that the AFC/M23 withdrew its forces from the city of Uvira as requested by the mediators, demonstrating continued commitment to peace efforts.
