Dozens of Young People Arrested During AFC/M23 Security Operation Near Katindo Camp
Goma, July 8, 2026 - Around fifty young people were arrested on Tuesday, July 7, during a security operation carried out by AFC/M23 police forces near the former Katindo military camp in Goma, North Kivu. According to testimonies collected from relatives and local residents, the arrests took place along Salongo 3 and Katoyi 1 avenues, located between the Mabanga-Nord and Kasika neighborhoods in Karisimbi commune. Residents said the operation targeted young people who had reportedly been identified by local communities following an increase in theft incidents in the area. Some of those arrested were also accused of consuming marijuana. Witnesses reported that the individuals were first gathered inside the Katindo military camp before being transported by truck to an unknown location. At this stage, no official communication has been issued regarding their identities, their current whereabouts, or the legal reasons behind their detention. Some community members are calling for a verification process to distinguish between individuals genuinely suspected of wrongdoing and those who may have been arrested without sufficient evidence. The arrests come shortly after another security operation conducted in Goma under the AFC/M23 administration, during which several young people were reportedly detained for alleged violations of municipal regulations and charges related to public disorder. The latest operation occurred as residents across the country were closely following the DRC national football team’s participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. While enthusiasm around the competition spread among the population, Goma remained under a strong security presence, with patrols and arrests reported in several neighborhoods. Earlier, several young people detained during celebrations following the DRC Leopards’ goal against England were released on Friday, July 3, after spending two nights in custody.
