Djibouti and Algeria Explore New Energy and Mining Cooperation Opportunities

DJIBOUTI CITY, July 5, 2026 - Djibouti and Algeria are seeking to strengthen cooperation in strategic sectors including energy, hydrocarbons, mining, and technical expertise, as officials from both countries discuss new avenues for partnership and economic development. The Minister of Energy in charge of Natural Resources, Dr. Djama Mohamed Hassan, held talks with Algeria’s Ambassador to Djibouti, Dr. Mohamed Nacer Bessaklia, during a meeting focused on expanding bilateral cooperation and identifying areas of mutual interest. Discussions centered on opportunities to enhance collaboration in hydrocarbons, mineral resources, and the exchange of technical knowledge, sectors considered essential for strengthening economic growth and diversifying national development strategies. During the meeting, the Djiboutian minister highlighted the historic and fraternal ties between the two countries, reaffirming Djibouti’s commitment to deepening cooperation with Algeria. He stressed the importance of developing stronger partnerships in oil and gas, mining, capacity building, and knowledge sharing. The Algerian ambassador welcomed the longstanding friendship between Algiers and Djibouti and expressed his country’s willingness to support Djibouti’s efforts to develop its energy and mining industries. The discussions also explored potential cooperation in professional training, technical assistance, and the implementation of joint projects aimed at improving energy security and promoting economic diversification. The meeting was attended by senior officials from Djibouti’s energy sector, including the Secretary General of the Ministry of Energy, Mohamed Kileh Wais, the Director General of the Djibouti International Hydrocarbons Company (SIHD), Dabar Adaweh Ladieh, as well as technical advisors Mahdi Waberi Hassan and Abass Aden Atteyeh. The discussions mark another step in strengthening Djibouti-Algeria relations and highlight the growing importance of energy cooperation as a driver of sustainable development, industrial growth, and closer ties between the two countries.
