Concerns Rise as AFC/M23 Rebels Receive Reinforcements
Masisi-Walikale, DRC - January 11, 2026 - AFC/M23 rebels have reinforced their positions with fighters and ammunition in Kasopo and Kazinga, located in the Osso Banyungu chiefdom, Masisi territory, North Kivu, on January 9, 2026. Local sources report that these reinforcements came from Nyabiondo and Masisi town, following a regrouping in Kaandja village, a strategic crossroads between Kasopo, Kazinga, and Kashebere. The move comes one week after clashes resumed between rebel forces and government troops, supported by Wazalendo, in the Katoy sector, where rebels lost several villages. Traditional leaders of Nyamabiko 1 and 2 (Masisi) and Waloa Yungu (Walikale) have expressed concern over a potential rebel offensive, urging FARDC and Wazalendo forces to remain vigilant. The reinforcements, particularly in areas hosting displaced populations, indicate that the rebels may be preparing to retake lost territories, intensifying insecurity in North Kivu.
