Rutshuru, North Kivu March 17, 2026 - A fragile return to calm was observed on March 17 in four villages of the Bwito chiefdom-Lusoa, Iyobora, Mirangi, and Chaala-after clashes between Wazalendo fighters and AFC/M23 rebels. The fighting began around 4:00 a.m., when the Wazalendo launched coordinated attacks on rebel positions. Hours of heavy and light weapons fire followed, plunging the civilian population into fear. The situation shifted after the arrival of AFC/M23 reinforcements from Birundule, forcing the Wazalendo to withdraw. The four villages are now under rebel control.
