Burundi Deploys Troops and Heavy Weapons Near Rwandan Border as Tensions Rise

Bujumbura, December 15, 2025 - Burundi has intensified its military presence along the Rwandan border, deploying troops, heavy weapons, and combat equipment amid escalating regional tensions linked to the conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

According to security sources, Burundian forces have reinforced positions in Busoni commune, Butanyerera province, near the Gasenyi-Nemba border, with senior military officials confirming the deployment of heavy artillery to counter potential threats from Rwanda. Additional troops have been transported to military camps, including the 411th camp in Mutwenzi, while night patrols by police and Imbonerakure youth have increased in border areas.

Security measures have also tightened in Bujumbura Province (former Cibitoke), where Burundian forces reportedly fired shells toward Kamanyola, in South Kivu. These strikes preceded AFC/M23 advances across the Rusizi Valley, reaching Uvira on Lake Tanganyika.

Before the UN Security Council, Burundi accused Rwanda of backing the AFC/M23, while residents near the border report growing fear of a possible interstate conflict. “We sleep dressed, ready to flee,” one local resident said.

Multiple sources further report a significant influx of weapons, including combat drones, with around 30 trucks delivering arms to the Mukoni military base in recent weeks-fueling concerns that Burundi is preparing for a wider confrontation.
