Burkina Faso - JNIM Claims Responsibility for a Series of Coordinated Attacks

Ouagadougou, November 24, 2025 - The jihadist coalition JNIM (Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin) announced on Monday that it had carried out a deadly assault against a Burkinabe armed forces position in Bibilgo, located in Koulpélogo province. According to the group's statement, the attack left seven Burkinabe soldiers dead. The militants claim to have seized five Kalashnikov rifles, along with various military equipment, and to have destroyed several motorcycles belonging to the security forces.

On the same day, the Al-Qaeda-affiliated organization also claimed responsibility for two simultaneous attacks in Tapoa province, targeting auxiliary militia positions in the localities of Lényoussi and Worgouy, in the Fada N’Gourma area. According to their communiqué, these operations resulted in the deaths of ten auxiliary fighters. JNIM further stated that its attackers were able to seize five (5) additional Kalashnikov rifles, six (6) motorcycles, and other equipment before withdrawing.

These attacks, conducted in two geographically distant areas, reflect a continuing escalation of insurgent operations in eastern Burkina Faso, where armed groups have been intensifying their assaults on both the national army and auxiliary defense forces over recent months.

The incidents also highlight the persistent vulnerability of military positions and volunteer security posts in border regions, despite ongoing efforts by the Burkinabe state to stabilize the area and counter extremist activity.
